Welcome to Asian Languages and Civilizations

The Department of Asian Languages and Civilizations was established at the University of Colorado at Boulder in 1982 as the Department of Oriental Languages and Literatures. Steadily expanding its offerings in Chinese and Japanese, the unit became the Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations in 1994 and, with the addition of new Asian language programs during the first decade of the twenty-first century, adopted the current designation of Asian Languages and Civilizations (ALC) in 2008.

The Department offers Bachelor’s degrees in Chinese and Japanese and beginning and intermediate courses in Arabic, Farsi, Hindi/Urdu, and Korean. At the graduate level, the Department has Master’s degree programs in Chinese and Japanese as well as joint BA/MA programs in Chinese and Japanese. Graduate offerings also include Dual MA Programs in either Chinese or Japanese and History or Religious Studies. A PhD program in Chinese and Japanese is now accepting applications.

In all programs students receive a thorough grounding in the modern language, an introduction to the classical language and literature, and a broad familiarity with the literary and cultural history of the selected areas.
