CHA Summer Fellowships

CHA summer stipends are designed for graduate students conducting research in the humanities and the arts during the summer months who don't already receive university-sponsored funding (in any amount). The $5,000 stipend will be paid out at the end of May and June in equal payments.  The excellence of the project will be the main criterion for selection.

CHA Dissertation Fellowships

The CHA offers two dissertation fellowships open to any CU Boulder PhD candidate working in the humanities and arts, campus-wide. The fellowship covers tuition for up to 5 dissertation hours per semester, mandatory student fees, student health insurance, and a stipend equal to that of a 50% Graduate Part-Time Instructor. Recipients may not hold another appointment such as a teaching or research assistantship during the fellowship period but may hold a 0% appointment such as a grader or reader.

Donor-Sponsored Graduate Student Grants

The Graduate School administers two grant funds that support the research, scholarship, and creative work of graduate students from all departments. Made possible by the generosity of our donors, these funds are:

  • Beverly Sears Graduate Student Grant Fund
  • Cynthia H. Schultz Graduate Student Grant Fund

Grants are for either $1,000 or $5,000, and are competitive. If you apply for a $5,000 grant you must provide a budget that fully justifies the request.

Eaton Graduate Student Research Awards

The Eaton Graduate Research Awards is a semi-annual competition for graduate students working in the humanities and arts to support conference participation where students present a paper or perform or display their work for those in the arts. 

The excellence of the project will be the main criterion for selection.

Edward G. Seidensticker Japan Summer Research Grant

The Center for Asian Studies invites CU Boulder graduate students working on Japan to apply for the Edward G. Seidensticker Japan Summer Research Grant. The Center will offer several grants of up to a maximum of $1200 each to help fund graduate-level research on Japan, Japanese language study in a formal program, or a combination of research and language study during Summer 2023.

Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships

FLAS fellowships administered by the Center for Asian Studies (CAS) are awarded competitively to students studying modern Asian languages. The U.S. Department of Education (ED) funds and oversees these awards, under the provisions of Title VI of the Higher Education Act. Funding is contingent upon annual ED program approval, Federal regulations, and continued Congressional funding, all of which may change from year to year. FLAS awards cannot be deferred.

Graduate School Student Travel Grant

The Graduate School offers partial funding for CU Boulder graduate students to present their work at meetings or conferences outside Colorado. The Graduate School provides a travel grant of $450 for domestic conferences and $700 for international conferences. Funds will be applied directly to the student's university account after the dates of travel have passed and proof of travel has been submitted (you must be enrolled during the term that the travel occurs or the funds will applied to the next term you are enrolled). If the account balance is zero, a refund via direct deposit. If the account balance is not zero, the funds will go toward covering that balance. The grant is treated like a fellowship and reported to the Office of Financial Aid; therefore, please be aware it may affect your student loan package. This grant is contingent on continued funding by the Graduate School.

Graduate and Professional Student Government Travel Grants

The Graduate and Professional Student Government (GPSG) awards funding (up to $300) to individual graduate students each academic semester to support travel to academic conferences, meetings, or other events related to the student's studies. Students are eligible to receive travel aid only once in their tenure as a CU Boulder graduate student. This allows more students a chance to get funding. Please review the Policy and example essays below.  Please Note: The GPSG Travel Grant is different from the Graduate School Student Travel Grant. Applying to GPSG Travel Grant does not affect your eligibility to apply to the the other.

    Hazel Barnes Flat

    The Hazel Barnes Flat in the heart of London is a gift to scholars in the humanities and arts by Hazel Barnes (1915-2008), the much admired Professor of Philosophy at CU Boulder and founder of the Interdisciplinary Program in the Humanities. Her will stipulates that the flat be made available to CU Boulder faculty and graduate students working in the humanities and the arts and that its operation be entrusted to the Center for Humanities & the Arts. The flat is arranged so that two independent parties may stay there at the same time if necessary. There are two bedrooms (the second has just a single bed) and two bathrooms.
